Theory as Practice Essay, Topic Decision, and Brief Overview
Theory as Practice Essay
For our theory as practice essay I am a little undecided about which topic to continue on with, the session with guest lecturer Jonathan Lindley and his lecture on Anti-Branding and 'Adbusters' I personally found it to be an interesting subject to talk about. We were given the task to:
Come up with two essay questions relating to the chosen topic.
To provide two definitions of chosen topics
Obtain a book relating to the chosen question/topic.
The two topics I am currently still torn between are:
- Discuss the effect of subcultures on influential graphic designers.
- Brand versus Anti-brand. How have graphic designers worked with or against brands, and to what effect?
Anti-Branding:
Do anti brand movements effect major companies or is it overlooked without change?
Does anti brand provide a solid enough point to inflict a reaction with the general public?
Can anti brand possibly be the key to escaping the clutches of unnecessary consumerism?
Subculture:
Discuss the effects of how the subculture and genre of [specific subculture] effects modern day designers and artists?
How have graphic designers and artists been influenced by subcultures enmasse?
Task 2: Personal Definitions
Subculture.
Subculture is a culture group within a larger culture, a subculture have varying beliefs and interests between one another, subcultures often consists the study of symbolism to clothing, music and other visible affections by members of these subcultures.
as for example subcultures consist of groups such as.
Cosplay: Cosplayers are people who dress up as favoured characters from movies, games anime ETC. (links with fandom)
Cyberpunk: Cyberpunk is a futuristic science fiction orientated subculture and genre focusing with a High-tech/low life style.
Fandom: Fandom can be for a lot of genres and media such as TV programmes, movies and more.
Bikers: Bikers are members of the public who have a fondness to motorcycles
Anti Brand.
Anti Brand is a global movement against large scale companies and brands such as McDonalds, Starbucks and more alike. Anti branding is usually formed by a large quantity of members of the society that aim to spread a word of disapproval and dissatisfaction against corporate action. This strategy is used to combat companies that hide a distasteful truth from the general public. As for example, the food produced by McDonalds and the vast amount of unsavoury ingredients that it contains.
I in fact affiliate myself with the subculture of Cyberpunk, I adore the aesthetic of the subculture and as a genre, Cyberpunk is a strong favourite. Out of these two topics I would enjoy discussing about Cyberpunk and how it has influenced media since it's birth in the mid 80s.
