A Sense of Place: Sticky Note Task

With the first Brief  'A Sense of Place' being provided, our first session in relation to the brief heavily aimed towards the students developing early ideas and bring out our creativity by seeing what a sense of place meant to us individually. To accomplish this, the class were given sticky notes and were then tasked with writing down words, phrases and sentences in relation to sense of place, collectively as a class we would then stick them all up against a wall to create a mind map.

 For this session I chose to do city life, due to living in Manchester for most of my youth I thought that writing about the city life with it's pros and cons could be a solid initial idea that I could develop upon throughout this project. 

 Along side the sticky note session I also created a possible idea in relation to the brief about living in a city and experiencing 'city life'. Understandably city life isn't for everyone, but personally I enjoy the architectural horizon, the cultural diversity, the street food and the neon nightlife. The possible idea I came up for this project is advertising and promoting the city of Manchester either it being website, poster or booklet but instead of featuring popular locations, I could showcase the backstreet, overlooked and out of the way places such as bars and restaurants. I believe that this idea could be a solid concept that I could develop throughout this project.

 Below is a photograph of the sticky notes I came up with during the session, due to my handwriting not being the neatest, below the photograph is a refined list of what the sticky notes say. 


  • Abundance of restaurants with exciting foods
  • A Plethora of stores to appeal to everyone
  • Exciting night life
  • Diverse architectural design

  • Food markets on weekends
  • Street food\
  • Shady streets and back alleys
  • Weekends can get overcrowded and busy

  • Skyline of metal and glass (can be considered either a pro or con)

Self Negotiated Project: Clothing Brand Week 1: Brief Analysis and Proposed Idea

Brief Analysis and Proposed Idea The brief for the 'Self Negotiated Project' has been provided. After reading the project synopsis, it appears that it is less restricted in comparison to the previous briefs we have been set on this course. I  heard details about this project prior to the brief going live, which meant I had ample time to come up with a solid idea in preparation for this project. The project will undergo over a period of 5 weeks, considering the idea I have in mind with just over a month to complete it is going to be precarious. Denis Wood 'Everything Sings'

During one of Rob Lycett's Thursday lectures, one of the Various Books we were suggested to read up on was a book called 'Everything Sings' by Denis Wood. The book features an innovative portrayal to mapping, the maps are rather unusual and possibly considered impractical which is what I like about them, Maps are created with a purpose and a job, to get you from point 'A' to point 'B'. Denis creates these maps but in a very different perspective instead of showing roads and train lines, he illustrates a map of a small vicinity where the only thing illustrated are little circles and squares labeled "disfigured trees". Denis surveyed a place called Boylan heights and throughout this book he documents various neighbourhoods using creative and interesting subjects such as 'Squirrel Highway' where he observed how the local wildlife would traverse, in this case Squirrels would use the telephone wires to travel safely over roads.  One of my pers...
