Physical Studio with John Kelly 4: Richard Hamilton Ideal Room

The Ideal Room

Richard Hamilton was a painter and a collage artist who created the collage Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing? in 1956 for the catalogue of the 'This is Tomorrow' exhibition in London as a comment on rising consumerism. Hamilton subsequently created several works in which he reworked the subject and composition of the pop art collage, including a 1992 version featuring the female body builder, Bernie Price.

For our workshop we were tasked with recreating Hamilton collage that represented the current decade. I decided to use Adobe Photoshop for this task so I had more freedom with the collage. Being able to play around with various items to produce an "ideal room" was rather interesting, there were so many ways I could experiment with this such as having a particular theme or set during a particular time.

To begin with I wanted to create a really silly 'Ideal room' using popular internet topics and occurrences of 2016 this was in fact inspired by a meme about a child asking their grandfather "what was 2016 like" resulting in an image symbolising various topics that happened during 2016.

For the Silly ideal room I wanted to create something similar to this image, I was able to obtain a watermark free image of an empty room to work on for this session, i found the image to be perfect for this, it was bright enough and had ample space to work with without having to edit the original image.
With the use of internet obtained images in Png format I was able to fill the room rather quickly and effortlessly. Additionally with the use of the brush tool I wanted to create a spray paint effect on the back wall of the image, the phrase used "did you just assume my gender" is a lighthearted nudge at the online arguments that occurred from the supposed militant nature of  feminists and social justice bloggers. This phrase later became a punchline along with "triggered" in may 2016.

The assets featured are a homage to multiple things such as, a gorilla in representation to the gorilla Harambe, the cartoon character squidward 'dabbing' which was a popular pose throughout the year, i also incorporated a UI of the popular game Pokemon Go which was released mid 2016 and became an instant hit.
