Seminar Session Collaboration vs Contention
Collaboration vs Contention
During this seminar session a small drawing activity was set for two people to connect two matching numbers together in turns. The activity consisted of the following rules
- Player 1 connects pairs of odd numbers
- Player 2 connects pairs of even numbers
- in turns counting upwards connect two matching numbers with a continuous line
- The lines cannot cross or intersect with other numbers on the field of play
This was a really interesting activity because other than the rules we weren't provided with any other information relating to the activity. The first time myself and another played this game, we did it with the intention of making it harder for the opposing player, we thought that due to it being a game that consisted of two players, one doing odd and the other even, that we were opposing players causing us to intentionally make ridiculous lines making it difficult for both players as the activity progressed. Eventually we got to a point where we couldn't continue any longer due trapping the higher numbers, only being able to complete about half of the first sheet we decided to try again but this time, co-operate.
Below is the result of opposing each other, it created a really interesting assortment of wave like lines, it reminds me of a simplistic cartographic map, and i think that the piece would look rather interesting if there were no numbers to it.
Below is a more the sheet where we both collaborated and attempted to complete the sheet by using as little white space as possible, in comparison to the previous sheet the lines look neater and more planned out and yet still clustered in specific places, one thing i find interesting about this is due to working together and attempting a more tactical approach the lines completely differ between activity sheets. I think both of these would look extremely interesting as works of art if the numbers were removed from the sheet.

As an addition we had the option to add another rule to the game, now this rule could be anything to either make the game easier or harder. the two rules i propose and would love to experiment with are the following
- The lines must be straight and drawn by ruler, the lines can only go horizontally and vertically, no diagonal lines!
- Using a random number generator of 1-64, create a list of combinations such as 4-53 and join the resulting numbers together.
Although both rule additions will make the game a lot longer to play i think the end product will be really interesting, what i would love to try at one point is to illustrate the lines and create pieces of art out of them where there aren't any numbers visible.
