Seminar Session Collaboration vs Contention

Image
Collaboration vs Contention During this seminar session a small drawing activity was set for two people to connect two matching numbers together in turns. The activity consisted of the following rules - Player 1 connects pairs of odd numbers - Player 2 connects pairs of even numbers - in turns counting upwards connect two matching numbers with a continuous line - The lines cannot cross or intersect with other numbers on the field of play This was a really interesting activity because other than the rules we weren't provided with any other information relating to the activity. The first time myself and another played this game, we did it with the intention of making it harder for the opposing player, we thought that due to it being a game that consisted of two players, one doing odd and the other even, that we were opposing players causing us to intentionally make ridiculous lines making it difficult for both players as the ...

Synthesising and Visualising Sound with Dr Anna Powell

Image
Synaesthesia During our seminar we discussed  synaesthesia  and it's effects in motion graphics and how a person's senses meld together such as visual movement triggering the perception of sound, or so that a synesthete might “hear” colours or “taste” shapes. As for example, Wassily Kandinsky and his work. Music played quite a vital role within his abstract paintings. For Kandinsky, music and colour existed in a relationship whereby each musical note could be distributed to an exact hue. Thus leading to Kandinsky to give many of his paintings music titles such as Composition or Improvisation . He stated ‘The sound of colours is so definite that it would be hard to find anyone who would express bright yellow with bass notes or dark blue with treble.'  Kandinsky: Improvisation 35 Creation Task. We were set the task to listen to any music or auditory extract of our choosing and create a small illustration or poster from what we could visualise by listening ...

Rob Lycett Creative Suite 3: Morpholo

Image
Morpholo Task This workshop with Rob Lycett was an interesting one, the task was to create our own version of a Morpholo. The Morpholo is a 'combinatria' of square tiles (carreaux) which can be arranged in different manners, as a game, or as art. The tiles, which contain black and white shapes that can be juxtaposed at will, yielding (at least) several billion unforeseen larger shapes. There is only one rule with this, we must match , on the edges, black against black and white against white. The Morpholo tile game was devised by Thieri Foulc in 1985. This passage was extracted from the worksheet provided with the task. This workshop was an introduction to Adobe Illustrator CC in which the session would be focusing upon the basic pen tool in relation to drawing/rendering and the manipulation of typographic forms. Our task today was to create 12 100mm square tiles  A slightly confusing process to this was the 8 bit binary number, this was an 8 ...

Inspirational Book, JPG

Image
Japan Graphics, Volume 1 Japan Graphics or 'JPG' for short is a really interesting book about Japanese Graphic design and illustration. The book was published in the early 2000s and it's a rather bulky consisting of designers and design teams showcasing designs, illustrations and photography. Majority of the designs within the book share a modern colourful styling with one another yet have their own unique appeal.  To put it bluntly I love this book and it's contents. Coming across this in the university library was like striking gold to me.  What caught my eye when I was searching for some inspirational books was the way the book stood out among the rest, the book cover has a very minimal design to it but the cover itself was made out of this textured plastic that reminds me of bubble wrap. The front of the book has a piece of foam shaped like a page or document icon housing the name of the book 'JPG' in a simple pixel font. A great hom...
