Convergence with Jonathan Lindley
Convergence
For our second lecture of Theory as Practice, we had a guest lecturer called Jonathan Lindley. Jonathan is a UK based graphic designer and music artist who is studying his PHD at the university of Huddersfield, his work and craft has been implemented heavily into music focused projects, eventually creating a record named Subversive Current.

I think the artwork Jonathan created for his album is really striking and inspirational, I love the graffiti style combined with real life photography. It's clean, modern and sticks to a minimal colour palette. Additionally his use of anonymity by illustrating skulls onto the individual shown on the album cover adds a unique appeal that suits with the style of the cover's design.
Jonathan introduced us to 'Convergence' which means to gather from different directions and to eventually meet. convergence is the translation of information, and as designers it is our purpose to communicate. His input of this was how vital the translation of information and how one of the main aspects of graphic design is to communicate effectively with our clients. By understanding and studying communication, it will allow the production of a clear message through out my work, being able to convey my thoughts towards my clientele is vital as a graphic designer.
Catalyst and Catalytic Culture
Jonathan had an idea about the culture that really influences people, he stated that ideas that have a catalytic influence converge the best.
Catalyst:
- A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent chemical Change.
- A person or thing that precipitates an event.
Culture:
- The ideas, customs, and social behaviour of particular people or society.
He stated that catalytic culture is the point when ideas mature. Ideas develop over long periods of time, but the
moment an idea has true influence that's the
moment it Matured. That culture, or idea, matured in such a way that
it’s communicated effectively and an audience
was ready to hear it, waiting to hear it.
Additionally Jonathan gave us an example to 'Catalytic Design' by showing the types of design and animation that inspires him. This part in particular was relatable to me because both myself and Jonathan share the same design style of cyberpunk and digital inspired artwork as well as the same inspirations. The main inspirations that we shared were the cyberpunk themed anime films 'Ghost in the Shell' and 'Akira'.

He also showed us to example work from Designers Republic, Autechre and Detroit Underground, each consisting of urban digital and futuristic designs that can be considered relevant to the cyberpunk subculture and genre, below are some examples of this work.
